In this talk, I discuss how African Diasporic traditions like Hoodoo are often mislabeled as “occult” because outsiders do not know and are very unfamiliar with our practice and roots. Occultism is rooted in European esotericism. Our systems were born of Ancestral remembrance, cultural survival, honoring the land, and living our Black legacy.
The occult is a European with its own history and goals, often goals of power, domination, and individualism; African Diasporic traditions are about the community, not only the self. Many rituals are communal, Ancestral, and honor land embodiment.
We honor the dead and work with our Spirit, but greatly tend to those living. That’s not the occult at all to me; it is inheritance.
