Module 1: Self Love And Safety First in Rootwork and Hoodoo Herbalism
Welcome to Plantcestors – Your Path to Healing with Purpose
One of the main mottos of Plantcestors is: Let’s love ourselves enough to overflow into care for each other, our communities, and our planet. This isn’t just about learning herbs; it’s about nurturing and living a way of life that uplifts everyone. Hoodoo and Rootwork is a way of life.
Rooted In Love And Safety Is Our Foundation
Rootwork and Hoodoo Herbalism have always prioritized self-love, community and safety, respect, and transparency. The Plantcestors’ approach honors this, making sure we move with care, knowledge, and intentionality as we work to reclaim our Black Ancestral wisdom.
About Plantcestors and Our Community of Wellness Practitioners
Plantcestors welcomes all Folks: students, practitioners, and wellness professionals of all kinds. Some content will and is Black Only due to the nature of the healing and Ancestral Wisdom left just for us for our Black Ancestors. While some in our community may be Rootworkers, holistic herbalists, or herbal apprentices, none of us are licensed medical doctors in this space. Even if you are licensed, that is a different avenue, and we must be mindful of how we share things, even if we are licensed in other areas. Our work is about equipping you with tools for spiritual, emotional, and financial wellness, as well as more, but also connection; it is not about diagnosing or prescribing beyond our means.
Completing “Hoodoo Herbalism 101” or any other training through Plantcestors does not make anyone a doctor. Not even a “RootDoctor,” a Root Doctor is a beloved and honored title in the community and requires years of training and ceremony. Instead, we embrace the traditional role of the Rootworker as one who complements the Root Doctor and modern medicine with Ancestral wisdom. As Rootworkers and Hoodoo Herbalists, Hoodooists are here to help Black Folks live meaningful lives and show up to help Black Folks achieve their goals around health, spirituality, and living our best Black selves.
Honoring Our Tradition in Modern Times
While Rootwork and Hoodism herbalism once filled roles similar to modern medical care in our communities, they’re best used as complementary practices today. We encourage openness with our medical providers about the herbs and remedies we use so that they can work together for our health. Releasing the shame and stigma surrounding our practices starts with honesty and not hiding certain things. If there’s tension with a healthcare provider, it may be a sign to seek a new provider who respects your holistic journey.
A Journey Rooted in Self-Love and Community Care
Thank you for joining Plantcestors. Let this journey be personal empowerment, guided by love and a commitment to healing ourselves and each other.
